About this event
Elida, The Forbidden Ghetto Girl.
Join Tzavta Club to hear Zipi (Zipora) Klein Jakob tell the story of her cousin Elida (means No-Birth, Birth [is] Forbidden) whose story is shared in her book Elida, The Forbidden Ghetto Girl.
Elida's story is unforgettable and tragic—from the birth in the Kovno ghetto, despite the Nazi prohibition on Jewish women's births, to smuggling the baby out of the ghetto, changing her name, identity and families, to her eventual murder (along with her husband among 90 victims) in a terrorist attack onboard of TWA flight from Athens to Rome in 1974.
In between, we are introduced to a gifted person (Elida finished her postdoctoral fellowship at the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot), a mother of three, who struggled to provide for her family in the framework of highly-complicated family life. The book serves as a reminder of the hardships experienced by second and third-generation of holocaust survivors, and the power of memories transferred from generation to generation.
Zipi (Zipora) Klein Jakob holds academic degrees in Literature and History. She was a high school history teacher, a pedagogical counselor for history instruction, and director of the educator's advancement division at the Open University in Israel. Klein Jacob also coaches memoir writers and edits their stories. Her historical investigations led her on the journey of historical discovery and verification that greatly influenced Elida, the Forbidden Ghetto Girl.
The printed book is available in Hebrew from the author, and the digital version is found on e-vrit.co.il. The English version is available on Amazon.
